Sleeper Keepers

Another January weekend and you have trawled through the 1000 channels on that not so trusted cable box, living in hope to find something of delight to your peepers. If you would like to think outside the cable box - why not try some of these on for size :

How about some Sleeper Keepers, outstanding films that titles just don't do them justice. And what's in a name? And a caper that is a candidate for such : 1973's Cops And Robbers.  When scant pensions, thoroughly disenchant two police officers portrayed by Joseph Bologna and Cliff Gorman respectively, all the cunning doth commence.  Bologna, the other half of Renee Taylor, a frighteningly talented comedy writing couple, (who deserved to have been infinitely more lauded than they actually were), stars here in Aram Avakian's hope diamond of a release.

More rare fare for you to have a stare -

Bedtime Story : (1964) An odd coupling of David Niven and Marlon Brando in this mid-60's forgotten comedy vehicle directed by Ralph Levy. This was a rare excursion and the first time Brando was cast in a funny film. And in this feature the man who cried Stella and dapper David Niven star as two caddish Lotharios who are chock filled of agendas for affluent woman. Set on the French Riviera and literally shot on location at Cannes , the Oscar winner for 1959's Doris Day delight Pillow Talk, (Stanley Shapiro) penned and produced this picture. This film strangely remains out of print..it is a true sleeper and Mama Partridge herself - Shirley Jones ups the ante with a little scene robbery.

Jack was a dark horse in :

Lemmon Twist : Good Neighbor Sam (1964) : Jack Lemmon is Sam Bissel - ad man with a heart that gets into a bit of a pickle in one of his most entertaining roles, even though the self-effacing Jack thought his performance here was abominable - it is a satire at its sweetest..and chockful'o' "in-humour about the advertising world. Once again Lemmon is the company lemming that is about to be catapulted into something bigger and better. The laughs will keep-a-comin' with this 1964 release. Also stars a seasoned Edward G Robinson and Romy Schneider.
